BetterWorldBooks

A social entreprise

 Historic

All began in 2001, after their graduation from the University of Notre Dame, in United States, BetterWorldBooks sold their college textbooks online.
This action has given the idea and they formulated a business plan using their experience in online books selling.
In 2003, the three friends started their business plan into the "Notre Dame Social Venture Business Plan Competition". They won the competition and they received competition’s grand prize of $7,000 and mentorship from entrepreneur David Murphy.
Murphy has been as BetterWorldBooks’ president and CEO from 2004 to 2011.

The company has gained his sustainable success with the backing of his 4 solid bases, the three founders and the CEO and vice president. BWB had 15 employees in the very beginning (2003) and has been growing to over 350 employees in 2014. Revenues in 2013 were near to $65 million.

All books are available with free shipping worldwide. BWB has a lot of international partners such as Feed the Children, Books for Africa, Room to Read, Worldfund, National Literacy Trust, etc.
In 2008, the company opened an operation in Dunfermline, Scotland and started a United Kingdom website in 2010.

Founded in 2002 by Christopher Fuchs, Xavier Helgesen and Jeff Kurtzma, BetterWorldBooks is an online for-profit bookseller with mission to promote and fund non-profit literacy programs... This online library donates books or a percentage of its profit to literacy programs around the world.
It is a B Labs-certified B-corporation (BetterWorldBooks, 2014)

Better World Books’ two main sources of growing inventory are:

  • Regular book drives at about 2,300 colleges and universities

  • And the over 3,000 libraries nationwide and donation program.

BWB sold the collected books through 23 online marketplaces, including Amazon.com, eBay and their own online e-commerce site: betterworldbooks.com

Moreover, BWB has donation boxes found on corners and on college campuses.
The company has significantly invested in technology and account enterprise system, which have helped to sustain opportunities in the long run.
However, in the process of evolution, the for-profit bookseller has come across many changes: as an example, it has changed its warehouse three times since its launch.
